Vision

Unfortunately, Waste Disposal is not yet history. There are still landfills in several regions of the world operated without any use of gas. We invite all the operators of landfill to change their knowledge how to overcome this old technique. The more utilisation of gas will be realised, the more the WtERT idea could be transferred.

Unfortunately, Recycling is not always a good idea to handle waste. Especially when industry bears up production processes with toxic waste it might be better to change the production process, than to recycle halfhearted after manufacturing in an old manner. "Recycling" sometimes is not a circular flow it is just an expensive move of a lot of secondary material in a circle.

The same thing happens with Incineration. Burning waste without any emission protection is a misdoing. Incineration without striving for any possible energy production, is ecologically and economically wrong.

After due consideration Waste to Energy Technologies will always be helpful.

Because the "Waste to Energy" term is not part of waste hierarchies ...

like

"Avoidance – Utilization – Disposal"

or the new 5-step waste hierarchy established in the European Union's Waste Framework Directive:

"Avoidance - ReUse - Recycling - Recovery - Disposal"

... we tried to bring this together in the WtERT Diagram, depicted aside.

It shows that every waste-to-energy technology IS A PATH to a responsible waste economy strategy which leads in a visionary way directly towards "Zero Waste".

It would be great to hear from all of you, whether this diagram is helpful to disseminate the idea of Waste to Energy. Feel free to use my email address: bauer@ia-gmbh.de

It would be a great pleasure if you could also join the discussion "What is Zero Waste?"

Waste-to-Energy is an essential element of every modern waste economy which includes also

- Climate protection

- Environment protection

- Resource protection

Prof. Nickolas Themelis (Columbia University N.Y.) founded the Waste-to-Energy Research and Technology Council in 2003. In 2009 WtERT Germany was founded as the German branch of the council.

BEST PRACTICE

Waste-to-Energy (WtE) facility

Renergia, a brand new Waste-to-Energy (WtE) facility opened in Canton Lucerne, shows that Waste-to-Energy can provide reliable heat for industries.

Category: Incineration / Waste-to-Energy plant
Executing firm: Renergia Zentralschweiz AG

MBT Ljubljana, Slovenia

In Slovenia arises one of the largest and most modern waste treatment plants in Europe.

Category: Recycling / MBT
Executing firm: STRABAG AG

Flue Gas Cleaning

The final unit of the incineration plant is one of the most important parts as it has the objective of cleaning the air pollutants produced.

Category: Incineration
Executing firm: ete.a - Ingenieurgesellschaft für Energie– und Umweltengineering & Beratung mbH

Batch Dry Fermentation

The biogas produced from the waste can be converted in a CHP to electrical and thermal energy or fed as processed bio-methane into the natural gas grid or used as fuel (CNG).

Category: Recycling / Fermentation
Executing firm: BEKON Energy Technologies Co. & KG

MBT Warsaw, Poland

The Bio-Dry™ system is a static, aerated and flexibly enclosed reactor for the biological drying of various solid waste matters containing some biodegradable contents.

Category: Recycling / MBT
Executing firm: Convaero GmbH
